Meralco defeats Air21, now tied for 2nd place

Meralco Bolts defeats Air21 Express, 100-91

Mike Cortez in just his 2nd game for Meralco scored 17 points with 6 assists against his former team and Cliff Hodge had an amazing game to lead all locals with 24 points and 13 rebounds as Meralco beat Air21, 100-91. Mario West led the Bolts with 29 points.

Air21 import Zach Graham led the Express with 22 points while former Meralco player Asi Taulava contributed 14 points.

With the win, Meralco is now tied for 2nd place with San Mig Coffee with a 5-3 record, they will face each other this Friday, September 20 at the Big Dome.

After a tough loss against GlobalPort last Wednesday at the MOA Arena, Meralco bounced back with a win over Air 21 Express, 85-72. The dynamic duo of Sol Mercado and Macmac Cardona combined for 42 points while Ronjay Buenafe had another solid game contributing 13 points. Reynel Hugnatan had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

JayR Reyes had a good game with 7 points and 14 rebounds. Rookie Cliff Hodge did not score but contributed 3 rebounds, 1 assists and 2 steals. John Wilson led Air21 with 16 points as no other Express player scored in double figures as the defense of Meralco held down Air21 in the 2nd half. With the win, the Bolts now have a 3-2 record.

Meralco now has a 4 win, 5 loss record, they now have to rely on other teams not to reach 5 wins in order to at keep their hopes alive and reach the next round.

6 players scored 8 or more points led by import Earl Barron with 34 points along with 10 rebounds. Mac Cardona, Asi Taulava and Sol Mercado combined for 48 points. Meralco will be a tough team to beat if these 3 will play this way.

Mac Cardona had his first game back from a right heel injury to lead the Meralco Bolts to a 95-93 win versus Air21 Express. Cardona scored 10 crucial points in the 4th quarter to give Meralco the lead, 94-91 with 23 seconds left in the game. Macmac finished with 23 points, 7 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals.

Rookie Hans Thiele in just his second game with the Bolts had a career high with 16 points (7 out of 9 shooting) and grabbed 6 rebounds. Rookie Rabeh Al-Hussaine led Air 21 again on a losing cause with 20 points and 7 rebounds.

Meralco now has a 4 win, 5 loss record and is tied with the Derby Ace Llamados.
