Meralco defeats Powerade, 94-86

Meralco booked the last semifinals slot as they beat Powerade, 94-86. Import Mario West and Macmac Cardona combined for 50 points as the Bolts pulled away in the 2nd half and earned their 1st semifinals stint since joining the PBA.

Reynel Hugnatan and Sol Mercado also played well for the Bolts scoring 14 and 10 points respectively. Meralco will carry over their 4-5 record in the single-round robin semifinals that starts on Friday.

Meralco Bolts import Mario West led the team with 29 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocks but it was his defense on Gary David together with the scoring of Sol Mercado (15 points – 6/8 from the field) in the 4th quarter which kept Powerade at bay. With back-to-back wins, Meralco now has a 4-4 record and is still possible to advance to the next round with only 1 game left.

Mac Cardona also scored 15 points along with 6 rebounds and 3 assists while Reynel Hugnatan scored double figures with 14 points. Omar Sneed led Powerade with 23 points, 17 rebounds and 5 assists.

Import Earl Barron lifter the Meralco Bolts to the quarterfinals with a big performance scoring 33 points along with 18 rebounds and 5 assists including 2 crucial free throws that sealed the game. Meralco will now face B-Meg in a best-of-three series starting Sunday

Two Bolts players with an all-around performance, Mac Cardona (24 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists) and Chris Ross (12 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks). Asi Taulava turned back time with another strong performance with 16 points and 9 rebounds (6 offensive).

The key was to limit Gary David (only 20 points on 2/10 from 2 and 3/14 from 3), Sol Mercado, Mark Macapagal and Mac Cardona took turns in defending David.

Meralco Bolts will be using a new import against the Powerade Tigers this Sunday, February 26. Seven footer Earl Barron will replace Jarrid Famous who contributed well for Meralco but with 2 losses in 3 games, Coach Ryan Gregorio decided to replace Famous in the current PBA Commissioners Cup, with a much more experienced Barron.

Earl Barron was a former import of Red Bull in 2005 and has played for the Miami Heat, New York Knicks, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trailblazers and was recently cut by the Golden State Warriors in the NBA.

Sol Mercado led the Meralco Bolts with 23 points and 6 assists to notch their 8th win in 13 games in the current PBA Philippine Cup. Gabby Espinas had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds against the Powerade Tigers who were led by Gary David with 25 points.

Mac Cardona also had a big all-around game with 17 points (11 in the 2nd half), 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Asi Taulava grabbed 11 rebounds but Powerade had the rebounding edge 51-42. Meralco had 8 steals and 7 blocks including 2 crucial blocks by Espinas in the 4th quarter.
